Memorial of Kelly Murray, Sloane Murray & Family – Please take the time to read & help….

As many of you know I have been to DC many times over the course of the past few years to shoot.  My very first client in DC was the Murrays.   At the time, Kelly and Sean had 5 girls.  FIVE GIRLS.  I have to admit I was a bit intimidated by the number but the minute I walked in to their beautiful, albeit modest Chevy Chase home, I felt like part of the family.  This is an amazing WOMAN.  Kelly, who just turned 40 this year was a clinical psychologist, naval officer, tenured professor at Loyala, author of the book ‘Crazy Love’, runner, avid traveler, philanthropist and one insanely amazing mother and friend.  I loved her from the minute I met her – she was beautiful, collected, down to earth, and FUNNY.  She knew her life was insane, she knew that having that many kids and the amazing career was a lot to handle but she was ALWAYS willing to sit down, have a glass of wine and enjoy good conversation.  Over the course of the last few years I was able to get to know her, shoot her and her expanded family again (girl number SIX was born last year) so needless to say  i was completely broken hearted when I got the news.

Friday night, driving home from swim lessons with her girls a storm erupted.  In an instant a large tree branch fell on her car, killing her and her beautiful, sweet third daughter, Sloane.  Left behind is Sean and the remaining 5 girls (Jillian, 12 Meghan, 11, Maeve, 6, Quinn, 2, and Kieran, 10 months) .  I don’t think we can begin to imagine how difficult this is and will be on their family and loved ones.   I am so thankful to have been introduced to such an amazing family.  Kelly and sweet Sloane will be forever missed.  I can’t begin to tell you how sorry I am.  Please keep this family in your prayers.  You can also help out by making a donation.  There is a memorial fund being set up to help assist with education for the remaining 5 girls.  Kelly, together with Sean worked like crazy to support her family and they will need large support to make up for the financial loss in the futre. I am ALSO asking any fellow photographer to help out too by posting this story with the pictures below on your blog to both spread the word on the scholarhip fund but also remind people to cherish their every day here b/c as this story resonates, we never know when its going to be our time.

Payments can be made to the Murray Girls College Scholarship Fund (send checks to Kelly McMahon, Attn: Murray Scholarship 3908 Leland St, Chevy Chase, MD 20815).

July 1, 2009 - 8:57 am Carole - Dear Beth, this is so heart-breaking, my feelings go out to yourself and all of Kelly and Sloane's family and friends. The girls and their mother positively glow and I hope that is something the sisters will be able to hold onto as they journey through life, as it is surely a gift their mother gave them and which at the moment they surely feel is sorely missing. I do so hope that we will one day discover the mystery of where our loved ones go, so that we will not feel such a sense of loss when they do. Barely a day goes by when I do not ache inside for hearing of a child who loses a parent or a parent who loses a child and, whilst being so grateful for every day that we can smell the grass and hear the sweet song of the birds, I feel that an awareness of our own vulnerability is what may drive us onwards to never be complacent and to strive, every day, to do something, however small, that makes the world a a safer and more pleasant place for children like Kelly's to grow up in. I'm not religious, but I like to think of a day when heaven is on earth. Beth, I think your photos always show what that would be like. May the girls see their Mum and Sloane in every ray of sunshine, starlight or sparkling raindrop and know that there are also people here who care x

July 1, 2009 - 6:22 pm amy boring - How very heart breaking. You just never know when your, or your loved one's time is up. The family will be in my thoughts and my heart goes out to them.

July 1, 2009 - 11:40 pm Ashton Nolley - Although, we do not understand why Kelly and her sweet daughter Sloane were taken from their family and friends, we do know that Kelly was an amazing, spectacular woman. A woman to be greatly admired and whose grace and strength will live on in all who were blessed to know her and her dear child, Sloane. After many walks and prayers, since her horrific accident, I truly believe in my very core that Kelly and Sloane have a special place in Heaven and will keep each other company and serve Our dear Lord well until the family one day is united again. Let us unite in prayer, this fourth of July holiday, and ask our dear Lord to wipe away the tears from her family and each day bring them peace and knowledge that they will hold each other again. God Bless the Murrays Now and Forever, Amen

July 2, 2009 - 12:50 am Sharon - I am saddened to read of such a tragedy. My thoughts & prayers are with Kelly & Sloane's family. You have captured gorgeous images which the family will cherish.

July 2, 2009 - 8:32 am Monica Lee - I can't stop crying... I can't believe this. Her class, Psychopathology, was the very first class I took at Loyola last spring. She was an awesome professor...so beautiful...so passionate...so positive... I miss you, Dr.Murray...my prayers are with your family & children.

July 2, 2009 - 9:09 am Joanne Joyce - This story has so touched my heart. Thankyou Meghan for sending this to me. I will keep the family in my prayers and hope to make a modest contribution to the education fund. We have 2 more angels in heaven now watching over us.

July 2, 2009 - 9:29 am Jamie Cristali - My heart really goes out to this family. I cannot imagine the loss, sorrow and heartache. Does anyone know if a page has been established on Facebook? I have many friends there who would love to pray for the family, and it might help reach more people. Our prayers are with the Murray's. Jamie Cristali

July 2, 2009 - 9:41 am Brian - I am shaken by the story. Inspired by this woman. Saddened for the father's unique burdens thrust upon him. At a complete loss as to how to prepare those great kids for the deep-reaching sorrow and grief that will last for years on end, and will literally impact generations. I enjoy writing, but I am dumbfounded here. I'm imagingl at least, how much love and comfort this woman and her daughter will be able to give to all the young and frightened souls as they arrive in heaven! What a job they'll do! How proud their family and friends should be!

July 2, 2009 - 5:40 pm Angie - I'm sure it's difficult for those that are close, but looking from an outside perspective at what this woman has accomplished in her life and the lives that she has affected sure makes impact. Even on people that live as far away as Arkansas. What a wonderful life story! What a beautiful life lived!

July 2, 2009 - 10:26 pm Maureen Lavery - Although I have never met Kelly or Sloane but just read about them, I cannot stop thinking about this wonderful person. I cannot, no matter how hard I try, come up with words of condolence equal to the loss of Kelly and Sloane. What a wonderful person, wife, mother, daughter, sister, teacher, friend. "Ireland, A Terrible Beauty", is a book written by Leon Uris who wrote of Ireland with its beauty, tragedies and the soil moistened by tears of its persecuted people and who in time rose above their situation. I can equate the title with the beautiful life of both Kelly and Sloane and although tragedy ended it much too soon, they will with the the help of God in time will find peace knowing how much they were loved by so many and that they are surely in heaven. I pray for Sean to have the strength needed for both himself and his girls to go forward one day at a time.

July 3, 2009 - 3:09 am Hillary - Oh My Gawd, I just cried. I am so sad for that family... I will post on my blog this weekend. So sad :(

July 8, 2009 - 10:22 am patrick friel - Beth Jansen, thank you for putting these pictures together. It's been a week since the funeral, and my heart still aches. Sean is an amazing guy. He will get through this with the love, help, and support of all his friends and family. I have to believe, as much as it hurts, he will look back at these photos one day and will be so happy he had them taken. They are beautiful!! What a loss for us all. Heart Breaking is the only word I can come up with.

July 9, 2009 - 2:38 pm rosie - so heartbreaking.. my heart aches for this family. hugs and prayers.

July 12, 2009 - 3:29 pm kelly mcmahon - MURRAY GIRLS COLLEGE FUND--Beth- Thank you so much much for sharing Kelly's story and allowing others to be touched by this remarkable family. As you know from sharing many glasses of wine with us that Kelly was the life of the party and we are all a little wounded. The kindness of total strangers to donate $10 or $250 to the college fund has provided a ray of sunshine. Sloane was the 'Mayor" of the neighborhood and had so many friends 4 year olds to 65 year olds- her energy is missed. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to send a check- it really is amazing and comforting to know so many people are sending positive energy and prayers to the Murray family. The girls are truly amazing- so delightful, smart, well mannered and kind- Kelly and Sean raised them well. Laugh a little more, forget about all the things that need to be cleaned and just love your family and friends. Beth- thank you for capturing their spirit--I love the photos!!!

July 13, 2009 - 3:51 am Noelle - This is so heartwrenching! We must all remember how precious life really is. If the family needs some help financially (besides their college fund) they can go to http://thelizlogelinfoundation.org/ this is a foundation were widows and widowers can go for support. Anyone can also donate to this wonderful cause as well. I will pray for this beautiful family.

July 13, 2009 - 9:15 am Jennifer Schmoeger - Beth - I check out your blog every now and then - it was introduced to me by another fellow photographer.
